Glasgow’s car parks each suit a different kind of visit. Shoppers and anyone heading to the city centre generally want Buchanan Galleries. Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum has its own small car park, currently running at reduced capacity because of ongoing works. Glasgow Science Centre has an on-site car park with a visitor discount that’s easy to miss if you don’t know the trick. And genuinely free parking exists, but mostly outside the core hours or the core streets, not in the middle of the day in the centre.

Buchanan Galleries Parking

Where: 220 Buchanan Street, G1 2FF, now managed by APCOA. It’s Glasgow’s main central multi-storey, about 2,000 spaces, and only a five-minute walk from Glasgow Queen Street station.

Opening hours: Monday to Saturday 7am to 9pm, Sunday 9am to 9pm. There’s no entry or exit after 9pm, since the car park is locked shut, so don’t plan to collect a car late in the evening. It’s closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

The evening rate is the trick worth knowing: if you’re only there for dinner or an evening out, entering after 5pm and leaving before 9pm costs a flat £2.50, far less than the daytime tariff for the same hours. Sundays are also a flat £5 for the whole day.

Good for: Buchanan Galleries itself, the wider Buchanan Street shopping area, Glasgow Queen Street station, and Buchanan Bus Station.

Kelvingrove Museum Parking

Currently reduced capacity: According to Glasgow Life, which runs the museum, parking spaces on the west side of the car park have been closed since 18 August 2025 for ongoing works, significantly cutting the number of available spaces. As of the last update, there are 58 spaces in total, including 10 Blue Badge bays, 2 EV charging bays and 1 motorbike bay. All disabled bays remain available. If you’re relying on parking here, especially at a busy time, have a backup plan and check the museum’s own website for the current status before you travel.

Where: The car park is off Argyle Street, Glasgow G3 8AG, accessed via Bunhouse Road, at the side of the museum. Access is currently restricted to cars only; other vehicles, including coaches, should use the designated bays on the east side of the building instead.

Prices, from Glasgow Life’s own site: £3.00 for up to 1 hour, £5.00 for 1–2 hours, £7.50 for 2–3 hours, then a flat £10.00 from 3 hours right through to 10 hours. Overnight is a flat £3.00 (6pm to 8am). Pay by coins (no notes), card, or the RingGo app.

Alternative parking: Glasgow Life itself points visitors to Bunhouse Road, next to the Kelvin Hall, if the museum’s own car park is full.

Glasgow Science Centre Parking

Where: An on-site car park at 50 Pacific Quay, Glasgow G51 1EA, on the south bank of the Clyde next to the Glasgow Tower.

The visitor rate, and the mistake to avoid: Parking costs £4 for the day if you’re visiting the Science Centre, but the Science Centre’s own website is explicit: you must take your car park ticket to the Science Centre Ticket Desk inside the main building to get this rate. The pay station in the car park itself cannot give you the visitor rate. Anyone who pays at the machine without visiting the desk is charged the standard non-visitor rate instead: £5 for up to an hour, £9.50 for up to 12 hours, or £20 for up to 24 hours, more than four times the visitor price for a full day.

Blue Badge holders: Free, with limited spaces; present your parking ticket at the Ticket Desk.

Good for: Glasgow Science Centre, the Glasgow Tower, and the IMAX cinema on site. It’s also roughly a 30-minute walk from Kelvingrove, so don’t treat the two as an easy joint outing on foot.

Free Parking in Glasgow: What’s Actually True

Genuinely free parking inside the city centre in the middle of a weekday doesn’t really exist; every central street is metered or restricted. A few things are worth knowing, though some of what circulates online about this is out of date or inconsistent, so treat the following as a starting point to check on the ground, not a guarantee.

Evenings: Many on-street meters in the city centre and West End stop charging in the early evening, commonly from around 6pm (5pm in parts of the West End), and stay free until the following morning. This is widely and consistently reported, but always check the specific sign on the street you park on, since times vary block by block.

Sundays are less certain than they look. Many current guides claim on-street parking across Glasgow is free on Sundays. However, Glasgow City Council introduced Sunday charging in the city centre back in 2019, with a £4-an-hour rate and a two-hour limit on the streets affected, specifically to end the previous free-Sunday arrangement. Whether that charging is still in force on every street, or whether some areas have reverted to free Sunday parking since, isn’t something this guide can confirm with certainty, since sources actively disagree. Check the parking sign on your specific street before assuming Sunday is free.

Residential streets on the edge of the centre: Areas like Dennistoun, Govan, and parts of the Gallowgate and Springburn sit outside the main controlled parking zones and are commonly reported as free or lightly restricted, at the cost of a 10 to 20-minute walk, or a short bus or Subway ride, into the centre.

Retail parks: Large out-of-town centres such as Silverburn, Glasgow Fort, Braehead and Parkhead Forge offer free parking, though usually time-limited and camera-monitored, and none are within walking distance of the city centre.

Subway Park and Ride: Not free, but cheap, at stations including Bridge Street, Kelvinbridge and Shields Road, letting you park on the edge of the network and take the Subway in rather than drive into the centre at all.
