A Southampton cruise day can take in two of southern England’s best-known heritage sites: Salisbury Cathedral, home to the best preserved of four surviving copies of the 1215 Magna Carta, and Stonehenge, the prehistoric monument and World Heritage Site cared for by English Heritage. Salisbury has direct rail links with Southampton, and the Stonehenge Tour bus run by Salisbury Reds links the city with the stones. Because both sites have last-entry times, plan back from your ship’s all-aboard time and choose one as your main stop.
Choosing Your Cruise-Day Plan
Pick a main stop before you book anything. Salisbury and Stonehenge each have last-entry times, and the Stonehenge Tour bus adds a leg between them, so trying to do everything leaves little slack for the journey back to the ship.
| Plan | Main stop | What to book | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salisbury Cathedral and the city | The Cathedral and the Chapter House with Magna Carta | A Cathedral ticket, booked in advance for the lower price and a private transfer from your cruise ship | The Cathedral can open late or close early for services and events |
| Stonehenge via Salisbury | Stonehenge | An English Heritage ticket and a Salisbury Reds Stonehenge Tour bus ticket or a private transfer from your cruise ship | Last entry is 3pm on the winter hours currently published |
| Both in one day | Stonehenge and the Cathedral | Both tickets, plus the bus or a private transfer from your cruise ship | Tight: each site has its own last-entry time and the bus runs to a timetable |
To make sure you’re always on time, book a private transfer. Whichever plan you choose, work backwards from your ship’s all-aboard time (the time by which every passenger must be back on board) and leave a generous margin for the return journey.

Timing Your Day Around the Ship
Start from the hard limits. Stonehenge’s last entry is 3pm on the winter hours currently published, and the Cathedral’s last entry is 4.15pm on a standard day. Both need time on arrival, so your real deadline for reaching either site is earlier than those times, and your ship’s all-aboard time is earlier still.
Count the return leg too: the train or bus back to Southampton, then the transfer to your terminal. Treat the all-aboard time as fixed and leave a margin for delays.
Book the tickets with the fewest options first: a Cathedral time slot, and for Stonehenge an advance English Heritage ticket for the discount.
